Observation Narrative
Plot is located on a gentle, broad crest of Stone Mountain that supports an extensive montane oak-hickory forest. This part of the stand is dominated by Carya ovata, with some Quercus rubra, Acer rubrum, and Carya ovalis also in the overstory. Oak and hickory recruitment are lacking and Acer saccharum, Acer rubrum, and Magnolia acuminata are prevalent in the sub-canopy layers. Although not confirmed by soil chemistry data, a lush herb-layer suggests a nutrient-rich substrate.
